The wind rattled the casements in their frames, blew spindrift off the eaves. He couldn’t hear them calling. Maybe they weren’t calling at all. He squeezed the teabag with his fingers and reached into the fridge for milk. How much more could he stand to read, he wondered. Not only because it violated her privacy, but did he really want to know about the things she’d written?

He paged forward in the document, stopping in August of this year. Here the diary entries took on the furtive tone of a young girl who was getting away with something.
